I was happy and intrigued at the same time when I discovered that Magnolia Bakery Lebanon was proposing a savory menu in addition to their famous cupcakes and other baked goods. So I headed down to ABC Achrafieh, Magnolia’s latest branch to check it all out.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon103

Famous for its freshly baked, favorite American desserts and decor, Magnolia Bakery offers guests over 150 varieties of handmade desserts, including cupcakes, cakes, pies, cheesecakes, icebox desserts, muffins, cookies, and its world famous banana pudding. In addition to its extensive dessert menu, Magnolia Bakery Lebanon also offers a variety of savory menu items, including sandwiches and salads.

Magnolia Bakery is a classic American bakery, cherished for its selection of old fashioned, freshly baked desserts and vintage décor. For over 15 years, Magnolia has provided patrons with a range of handmade baked goods, including pies, cakes, cheesecakes, and the famous banana pudding. Over 100 different products are available daily, ranging from breakfast items to a full array of cupcakes, cakes, brownies, cookies, pies and puddings. At Magnolia Bakery everything is prepared fresh from scratch on premises, all day, every day, using only the finest ingredients.

Magnolia, located next to the street entrance of ABC, facing Noura and on the same floor as many of the other restaurants, has a perfect location occupying the corner of the street with a terrace offering a view of Beirut’s hustle and bustle. I loved the place so much that I took the time to write about it while waiting for my friends to arrive.

As you walk in, you are welcomed by a display of cakes and cookies that will make your mouth water. Colors and beautiful pieces covered with cream, chocolate chips, cookies or simply left as is. Stunning frosting that will make you want to skip lunch and plunge straight into dessert.

Features and décor

  • The floor is covered with stripes of wood parquet coupled with white and black marble dots
  • Facing the entrance is an open kitchen, where cakes are prepared on an hourly basis
  • Cakes, bites, muffins and other sweet things are displayed and your eyes will soon be watering from excitement
  • Beige wood stripes separate the front of house from the kitchen
  • All the walls are decorated with American-themed utensils and designs
  • Filling the space are rectangular white marble tables surrounded by grey metallic chairs
  • All tables are decorated with vases of flowers, napkins in metallic containers and artfully presented sugar
  • The ceiling above the kitchen has a reflective, metallic design and 19 chandeliers hang above to provide light
  • One table, bigger then the others, can host up to eight guests facing the mirror-decorated wall

Just remember, Magnolia “Bakery” is not a bread provider. In the States a bakery is a shop that bakes cakes, a dessert shop, as well as a bread parlor. So, hop-on and let’s discover Magnolia’s sandwiches and salads together.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon092

The savory menu:

  • Quiche
  • Salads
  • Soup
  • Sandwiches
  • Warm sandwiches
  • All day breakfast
  • Pastas
  • Beverages
I’ve tried today:
  • Pecan Goat Cheese Salad 15,500L.L: Warm goat cheese on a bed of mixed greens, baby spinach, dried apricots, dried tomatoes with honey vinegar dressing.I can safely say that this salad is one Magnolia’s finest offerings. In a generously filled bowl of salad are goat cheese chunks covered with caramelized pecan nuts that explode into flavor. Served warm, the pecans add a certain touch of finesse that adds a dash of style to the salad. The nice honey flavor is like a cherry on top, putting a smile on your face.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon006

  • Chopped Cobb 17,000L.L: Grilled chicken, blue cheese, crispy bacon, avocado and endives with mustard vinaigrette dressing. When you say “chicken salad”, the first thing that comes to mind is, “I hope the chicken isn’t dry”. Not only juicy and tasty, the chicken was perfectly marinated and mixed with lovely crispy bacon cut in small cubes, fresh endives, blue cheese and fresh greens. Lovely!

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon002

  • Nicoise Salad 17,00L.L: Tuna, green beans, cherry tomatoes, black olives, potatoes, and a hard boiled quail egg with vinaigrette dressing. If you’re a fan of Niçoise salads, this is a must have. Choose to have fresh or canned tuna, I prefer the canned, and enjoy the little details that make up this dish, like the sesame seeds and the many textures that make of this salad a different and unique one. I loved the vinaigrette and mustard, which leaves a pleasant aftertaste in your mouth. The taste of the black olives is something I remember until now.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon055

  • Tuna Club Sandwich 14,000L.L: Marinated tuna, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles with a special sauce on whole wheat brown toast. A generous portion, tasty ingredients, two slices of slightly crunchy fresh brown bread filled with a tuna mix, but the overall flavor was a little too salty for my taste. Good, but needs some fine-tuning.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon019

  • Smoked Salmon Bagel 17,000L.L: Smoked salmon on your choice of bagel or whole wheat brown toast with cream cheese, fresh dill, capers, onions and tomatoes.A bagel, cut in half, filled with salmon and served on a bed of celery. To start with, I found the bagel too chewy for a salmon sandwich and the way it is presented on a vegetable bed obliges you to eat it as quickly as you can so it doesn’t become soggy. I’d personally reconsider the presentation, toast the bun a bit more and you can serve a perfect sandwich.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon015

  • Magnolia Chicken 15,500L.L: Basil marinates chicken breast with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and mayo-mustard on a choice of baguette. Excellent! The basil aromas, sweet aftertaste of the sun-dried tomatoes in this juicy sandwich are really addictive.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon011

The things I loved and enjoyed:
  • The decorative plates and their colored lines
  • The small porcelain bowls of green olives and cherry tomatoes
  • The generous portions
  • The fresh feel and great taste of the food

Now for the best part – Magnolia’s cakes

  • Snickers: The trip simply starts with a crunch that forces you to lick your lips, and it’s turns out to be heavenly when the Snickers flavor erupts. A dark chocolate pie crust covered with white cream and slices of Snickers chocolate on top. This cake’s textures are exquisite.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon075

  • Banana Cream Pie: Uffffff… Wowww… Extraordinary, fantastic. A slight crunch, an enjoyable yellow light pastry cream and whipped cream on top. I cannot tell you how overwhelmed I was while eating it. It’s so awesome! So excellent! So exquisite!

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon077

  • Carrot cake: An orange cake covered with a white sugar frosting mixed with nuts. Inside are tiny spots of orange and dry raisins. As good as it should be, the American way.
  • Chocolate with Vanilla Buttercream: A thick and substantial chocolate cream, spongy and juicy covered with a fine sweet white frosting. Simple and tasty.
  • Marble Cream Cheese Brownie: Could be better.
  • Cheesecakes: Key lime, blueberry, chocolate.
  • Apple Cranberry Walnut Muffin: Crunchy bottom, cream filling.
  • Flourless Chocolate Cake: The only gluten free item, valhrona chocolate.

A few weeks ago, I went to Ginette where I discovered a dessert that could be the best in Lebanon – Banana Cream Pie. I came here to the source to taste this famous pudding and believe me, it’s one of those things that will make you close your eyes without even feeling it. So good and so tasty, this cake is out of this world. On the other hand, I didn’t like the cheesecakes and here again, at the source, they were not the best desserts that Magnolia has on the menu.

Magnolia_Bakery_Achrafieh_Lebanon081

For the desserts, to be honest, since I first tasted Magnolia bakery’s offerings last year, I thought that their creations were too sweet for our country. We Lebanese prefer our desserts with less sugar and more flavor, this is why I was not a fan of their cupcakes. As for the cakes, they are very tasty but I would personally make the portions smaller, automatically making the price lower and giving the customers a chance to taste more than one dessert.

As a conclusion, I think that Magnolia’s savory menu is worth trying, followed by a selection of some of their finest cakes, which are sure to put a smile on your face. I’ve been there and left happy, I’ll be coming back soon in the near future. Give it a try… You’ll enjoy it.

Michel: Tasty Food and Positive Vibes

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut49

Back in October, I discovered Michel, a casual bistro nestled in the heart of Achrafieh, offering some fine dishes without being pretentious or arrogant. A simple bistro where Michel himself makes sure every single detail is perfect. I didn’t take me long before I came back to Michel and his tasty food, which never fails to put a smile on my face.

As soon as I entered the place, I was welcomed by Michel, and I couldn’t help but notice the improvements everywhere. Overall, it was the same feel, the same simplicity and same vibes with a touch of color and freshness.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut40

Some Improvements I Loved

  • Peugeot salt and pepper mills installed on all the tables
  • An additional small round table has been added
  • A blackboard has been added proposing the day’s specials
  • The tables have now a complete set of glasses laid out for you
  • A red table cloth – I love it
  • Flowers decorating the bar
  • 100% artisanal brown bread has been added to the basket. “Roger Le Boulanger” produces them down in Achrafieh and “The French Bakery” produces the white loaves.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut27

The Little Details

  • A one-door restaurant located in the heart of Achrafieh, behind bank Byblos’ Headquarters
  • Red curtains protect the restaurants from strong sunny spells during the daytime, as well as hiding the black wood supporting the glass doors
  • Two blackboards at the entrance display the menu and specials
  • Inside you find a cozy place with a white ceiling and light wood parquet
  • A bar at the end of the restaurant displays the wine collection
  • A long mirror to the left makes the place look bigger, supported by a long brown bench underneath it
  • To the right a beautiful bespoke wallpaper is decorated with two Parisian-style paintings and a black board
  • Three standing Burgundy lanterns lean over the tables
  • Over the bar, a basket of flowers adds a touch of finesse
  • Dark wood tables surrounded by brown chairs and decorated with nylon beige placemats, white plates and a tissue napkins create a classic ambiance

The Bistro de Michel welcomes guests from Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. The place seats 38 people inside and on the terrace, spread over an area of 90m2. Located in a quiet neighborhood, Michel’s place has a calm vibe, reflecting the real French tradition of a “Bistrot de Quartier” or a neighborhood restaurant. Michel does everything, making you really feel at home.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut28

Good to Know

  • The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner
  • It can host up to 35 people and can be booked for private gatherings
  • The bill is very reasonable with a $35 per person check including starters, the main dish and dessert
  • Plats du jour are changed daily and are all French choices
  • The bread is homemade and provided by my favorite place – The French Bakery

Dinner started with a basket of warm white, crispy bread served with crushed olives and a bottle of olive oil giving a good, tasty first impression. The bread deserves a minute: A thin crust with a light filling where the quantity of yeast is dosed perfectly, making it soft and tender, melting under your teeth like butter. I’ve always shown my appreciation to “The French Bakery” bread and have to write about it again: the white bread, it’s thin crunchy crust and fluffy airy filling is exquisite, indescribable and incomparable. I would love to visit the bakery one day and eat their freshly baked.

Let’s enjoy some fine French cuisine:

  • Carpaccio Michel: Served on a square plate, thin sliced meat filets are marinated in spices, lightly cooked in the oven and covered with wild rocca, truffle oil and grilled mushrooms. Soft and tender meat, perfectly spiced and seasoned while the juicy mushrooms add an interesting texture. Greenery, Parmesan and finesse added by the truffle oil. Perfect.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut45

  • Asparagus Salad: On a round plate, five freshly imported asparagus are served with palmito shoots that crunch pleasantly erupting into a hundred flavors. I loved its lemony effect and saltiness that tickles your taste buds. Perfectly cooked and served warm, they crumble gently and pleasantly. Some heart of palms and cherry tomatoes add a touch of color while the lettuce makes this plate filling.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut20

  • Salade Fromage de Chevre Chaud: The goat cheese salad might be a simple thing to do but at Michel’s things are different. Goat cheese is cooked meticulously on a thin slice of bread creating a crunchy/soft warm bite enjoyed with a smile. Four super thin green apple slices and fig pieces cut in half add the perfect final touch. The freshness and beautiful colors of this salad are mouthwatering. It’s a must order.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut47

  • Fresh Crab Salad: One of the day’s specials, this crab salad was so generous and tasty that it should be added permanently to the menu. Served with lettuce, endives and a lemon sauce, every bite is enjoyable and filled with a hundred flavors

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut46

  • Foie de Volaille au Porto: One of my favorite plates at Michel’s is the chicken liver and its incredible sauce. Just throw your fries in and enjoy the mix in style. The meat is so tender and light and the sauce exquisite. The chicken liver plate with its strong peppery flavor is a unique dish, which I loved. Even though salty today, I finished it completely. I would recommend you try the chicken liver plate’s sauce with the meat – it is exquisite. I’ll just suggest serving the fries without salt: salty fries added to the plate’s sauce is an overdose.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut51

  • Asparagus Risotto: Just imagine a generous portion of white rice decorated with long asparagus cut in halves and a cherry tomato. A generous mix of rice with melted cheese that’s tasty and full of flavors but needs a hint of salt and pepper. Don’t forget to add some to be able to enjoy your plate. I would suggest a large pepper mill presented after the plate lands on the table, a nice, traditional ritual in French bistros.
  • Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut49
  • Tiger Prawns: Four prawns served in their shell. Juicy and covered with extra virgin olive oil, those are enjoyable as is, there’s no need for any sauce. You can try the tartar on the side: it’s awesome.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut48

  • Seafood Pasta: Perfectly mixed and filled with flavors, but the pasta was a bit over cooked. We tend to forget sometimes that the pasta continues cooking on the plate specially when its mixed with a hot sauce. On the other hand, accidentally crunching on the shrimp tails is not the best of experiences. Please, the shrimp tail should be removed; they cannot be seen, mixed with tomato sauce and sometimes mistakenly swallowed.

Bistro_Michel_Achrafieh_Beirut50

The Main Points:

  • The food is really great
  • The ambiance at Michel’s bistro is so enjoyable and simple
  • Michel is a professional person and acts like one – making sure things are done perfectly
  • The waiters help Michel in a synchronized way

Second time, second pleasant experience, second tasty discovery. If you haven’t visited Michel yet, please do so and enjoy a simple cuisine created with love, passion and dedication where everyone dines as if they’re at home.

Urbanista: Let’s Enjoy Some Urban Bliss

Urbanista_Cafe_Bliss_Street_Beirut36

I’ve been a fan of Urbanista since they first opened in Gemmayze a few years back. Serving tasty food in a unique ambiance filled with positivity and joy, Urbanista is the perfect way to start your day, stop by for a quick lunch or spend hours surfing the net relaxing on one of their designer sofas.

Urbanista_Cafe_Bliss_Street_Beirut31

Meeting students from AUB for breakfast on a busy, but beautiful morning, we decided to review Urbanista’s breakfast together. Making sure to order a wide variety of dishes we sat, sipping our coffee slowly. Time passed so quickly…

Priding itself on being part of the cosmopolitan city of Beirut, Urbanista mirrors Beirut’s vibrant character. Located in Gemmayze, Achrafiye, and now Bliss street, Urbanista emanates distinctive positive vibes, inspired by both Manhattan and London, and sealed by Beirut. Western delicacies have been combined with Mediterranean hospitality to create the ideal setting for your every mood. Urbanista serves delicious dishes, fresh-brewed coffee, sandwiches and desserts for you to enjoy while you sink into comfortable leather couches or sit around the famous, thought-provoking and idea-sharing communal table. Among the delicious treats you will find on our menu, our highly recommended specials are the Salad Bar – composed of only the freshest ingredients, the Seared Tuna, the famous Fish and Chips and the Organic Smoked Salmon. The Seared Tuna is scrumptious: garnished with sliced carrots, scallion, apple sticks, sesame and coriander with wasabi sauce, spread over whole-wheat brown bread. As for the Smoked Salmon, it is complemented by spinach, chive, dill, onion, lemon and topped off by a delicious avocado sauce on a loaf of whole-wheat bio bread. Urbanista also exhibits original and iconic urbanwear, Moleskine accessories and other stylish creations designed by local and international established and emerging designers in tune with Beirut’s cultural vibe.

Urbanista’s Beautiful Decor

  • The restaurant can be accessed from two sides. One from the cinema side and another from the terrace facing Bliss Main Street.
  • Modernism mixed with an old style transports you into New York’s industrial look.
  • The ceiling is painted in white, while metallic structures add the industrial feel to the place.
  • Green lights are suspended from the ceiling over the green sofas, other larger one lights the bar and more designer lanterns decorate the other corners of the space.
  • A salad bar, centered in the middle is the signature item Urbanista is known for in Gemmayze.
  • Real wood tables supported by metallic structures fill in the space, surrounded by designer metal and wood chairs.
  • A long green leather bench follows the right wall from side to side.
  • Stairs take you to the first floor where a study area welcomes students from AUB and beyond.
  • Four light brown leather sofas near the door, add an old-fashioned, designer touch.
  • The space is beautifully designed and perfectly lit and light enters from two sides, creating interesting shadows.
  • On the terrace, metallic chairs surrounding round wooden tables make you feel like you’re on a cafe trottoir in Europe.
  • Mixing modernity, style and authenticity, traditional Lebanese tiles cover the floor.
  • Look after the different chandeliers designs suspended from above: a handful of different industrial designs in every imaginable size add just enough light.
  • A bar at the end prepares the orders.
  • Paper placemats decorate all the tables as well as the signature coasters along with their salt and pepper mills.

With some nice enjoyable jazz music playing in the background, I enjoyed a tasty breakfast.

Urbanista_Cafe_Bliss_Street_Beirut36

We tried to order as many dishes as possible to have a complete idea of the offering:

  • Brie and eggs with Sundried tomatoes: In a copper casserole, eggs are mixed with Brie cheese and dried tomatoes as well as some black olives. A perfect mix combining the brie’s juiciness and the perfectly cooked eggs that are full of flavor and taste. I think the picture speaks for itself.
  • Pancakes served with strawberry coulis, Nutella and maple syrup: though thinner than I expected, these pancakes are tasty as well as the sauces that come with them.
  • French baguettes, slightly toasted: With labneh, cheese and the many orders, we received two baskets of French baguettes, kept as is but gently toasted to give them a crispy feel.
  • Scrambled eggs with mushrooms, parsley and tomatoes: Perfect! A thick layer of eggs mixed with vegetables and well cooked. Salted and peppered in style, they are enjoyable, served with plates of fresh vegetables. It’s not as easy as you think to create perfect eggs. Those should be moist without being undercooked, well seasoned without an overdose and shiny without being dried out. Urbanista manages to offer a fine quality.
  • The hash brown potatoes were crunchy and tasty, but a bit oily
  • The halloumi platter is worth trying as well, especially for its freshness, served with olives and fresh vegetables.
  • The labneh is superb: hard and with a fresh authentic feel, I enjoyed its non-commercial feel and it’s served with a breadbasket, olives and fresh vegetables.

The Things I Liked

  • The food is tasty and fresh
  • The portions are generous
  • They use Zejd, my favorite local olive oil

With the opening of this new center where Roadster, Bunz, Paul and Urbanista have landed, Bliss regains its popularity offering to the AUB students more refined choices of food.

I previously wrote about Urbanista Gemmayze which I like, despite its claustrophobic feel and “unwelcoming waiters”. I always enjoyed Urbanista’s vibes and good food, which were transferred from Gemmayze to Bliss giving the students a cafe to enjoy.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary26

Where should I start and how should I start? I suppose many of you might presume by now that I’ve been paid by La Petite Maison to write about them. Articles, reviews, videos and every time I’m asked to recommend a place to enjoy a fine dinner, LPM is the first name that pops out. I do enjoy this place; it relaxes me. I love its food, its ambiance and professional service, and this is why I come back whenever I have the chance to do so.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary06
Tonight, celebrating LPM’s first year anniversary, accompanied by my lovely wife, I spent a memorable night in the company of Raphael, Yannick, Miro, Bob, Olivier, Nina, Rayan, Mira and all the worldwide team of La Petite Maison, who had flown from London and Dubai to celebrate the success story that started in Lebanon a little more than 12 months ago.

For their first anniversary, La Petite Maison celebrated with the Gipsy Queens. The Gypsy Queens is a French pop band, originating from Nice. The five-piece band is an outfit worth seeing, and consists of Didier Casnati (Italian lead singer and front man), Fred Novelli (French double-bassist), Anders Klunderud (Norwegian guitarist and ex- professional footballer), Jack Kane (Scottish saxophonist) and Manuel Polin (Mexican drummer).

I’m not sure if you want me to describe the place again, its ambiance, service and food, since I’ve done that quite a few times already… Believe me when I say, that tonight’s dinner was enchanting. The food was impeccable, as always, especially so in the presence of the famous Raphael himself. The ambiance was breathtaking and a band that knows the art of fun entertained us. The waiters were exceptional and well trained… A night to be remembered.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary17

Mohammad Radi, our waiter has been working at LPM for the last year. Happy doing what he does, he took all the time in the world to make us remember this night. Smiling and subtly opening up some conversation, he definitely added a touch to the party.

Dinner started with a cherry cocktail, tonight’s special, followed by a series of dishes the place has become known for. The journey started with a green pea salad, fresh and simple. The warm shrimp in olive oil and lemon were great, as always. Pissaladiére with anchovies, three simple yet tasty bites served on a rectangular plate. The Caesar salad, a simple one with Portobello mushrooms and artichokes, a unique innovation I discovered a few weeks ago while spending sometime with Rapahel in the kitchen.

Dinner continued while we moved to the main plates, a dish of fish and another of meat. I think you’ll believe me if I tell you that I’ve never eaten a dish that’s so pure, so white, so juicy and so tasty as well as a meat that’s close to none. I ate six of the world’s best meat last week in London and this one was even better.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary10

While we enjoyed a calm dinner by candlelight, the Gypsy Queens toured around, reciting their repertoire on every table. They sang “That’s Amore” to us as they continued playing until the first hour after midnight.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary13

I expected entertainment but not something as vibrant as the Gypsy Queens. They danced, sang, jumped on tables and even did their grand finale in the kitchen, thanking the team. No microphones and no stage, their way of walking around put a smile on all our faces. A beautiful night we didn’t want to end, perfect on all levels, amazement struck us all.

La_Petite_Maison_LPM_Beirut_Restaurant_Anniversary26

After dessert, where we enjoyed some caramel mousse and passion fruit posset, we left happy counting the minutes to our next visit. I hope the Gypsy Queens would come to Lebanon soon enough reviving the Lebanese nightlife scene.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut53

I’m not sure if I should listen to my friends’ comments or even read previous reviews of Metropole before writing this piece. All I know is that I enjoyed my time, I loved the place and ate some decent food. It might be early to judge, but let me state the facts as I experienced them and I hope I won’t have to change my mind on the next visit.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut02
Located in the prestigious Grand Hotels District in Downtown Beirut, Métropole is a brasserie with a relaxed upscale setting, serving not only French food, but classic dishes from other cuisines such as American and Italian. The menu is prepared by French chefs and includes steaks, chicken and beef dishes, pastas, a gourmet hamburger, an extensive wine list and a raw seafood bar.Métropole is open every day of the week for lunch and dinner and serves brunch on Sundays. We arrived on a calm Tuesday when the terrace was full while the inner dining space was calmer, so we decided to feel the vibe of the place by taking over the inner right corner

Metropole is really an extraordinary place, reproducing the French bistro feel, through its decor, high ceilings, mirrors and colors. I couldn’t but take a minute to enjoy the place, its details and ambiance while taking one picture after another.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut42
This was the first time in months that I decided not to take any notes while eating but to simply enjoy the food and venue. We only had one hour to finish lunch before moving to other meetings, and we planned to wrap it up with their signature pain perdu that so many have been talking about.
Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut52
The place transports you into Paris’s busy streets. Red colors, large mirrors, a high ceiling, metallic designs, writing on the glass surfaces, a large bar, wooden tables, leather sofas, wine bottles and details made famous by the French capital’s street cafes.

Lunch started with a basket of fresh bread while the waiter, dressed in black from head to toe, in an apron, gilet and pants served us with a smile.

The menu:

  • Hors D’Oeuvres
  • Plats du Jour
  • Le Bar a Huitres
  • Les Salades
  • Les Plats
  • Les Sandwiches

We started with grilled calamari with lemon dressing and capers as well as a goat cheese salad with a honey rosemary salad. Two plates that taste as good as they look and where appetizing, fresh and enjoyable. I loved the grilled flavor of the calamari and its enjoyable feeling under the teeth.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut53

Roula decided to have the sea bream served with quinoa, which she enjoyed so much thanks to its details, nice presentation, the fact it was perfectly cooked and its rich flavors. On a round plate, a portion of fish, beautifully decorated with vegetables cut in cubes, and laying on a bed of quinoa, juicy and dissipating those grilled aromas was such an enjoyable experience.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut29

I personally went for the Beef Stroganoff, served with rice. Beef Stroganoff is a Russian dish of sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with sour cream. From its origins in mid-19th-century Russia, it has become popular around the world, with considerable variation from the original recipe. I loved it! Tender slices of beef generously filling my plate around a portion of rice cooked al dente. I really loved it on all fronts, and you know how hard it is to succeed a plate like this without having a chewy or watery outcome.

Metropole_Restaurant_Review_Beirut54

While enjoying the nice Parisian ambiance and looking at the little details that constitute the decor of Metropole, we asked for an express pain perdu. Pain perdu, or French toast, at Metropole is one of those sophisticated examples, and a little different from others you might have had. Like the one Blackrock served up, Metropole’s looks like a soufflé. The first bite is what makes people love it. The first impression, and it stays with you, of a juicy and creamy bun, soaked in milk and containing all the flavors a dessert should have in order to work well. The second is less tasty and as you move towards the bottom, the bread turns out to be uncooked, heavy and condensed. I personally always believe that a pain perdu should be served on a plate, and made of a flat bun with no sophistication. Saying it’s the best in town is far from being a reality.

Metropole is a place to be considered for a business lunch or a cup of coffee on a fresh afternoon. I might think of it less on weekend nights where it transforms into a gathering spot for Beirut’s ‘before-party’ diners.

PS: I think it’s overpriced for a neighborhood bistro.

Onno: Speechless is the Word!

What more can I say about Onno, this small modest Armenian restaurant in Bourj Hammoud. I can easily repost the same review published exactly a year ago, but I need to give this place justice by reliving the great experience in words… Especially that this time I was there with Chef Patron Raphael Dontoye of La Petite Maison worldwide…

Onno_Lebanese_Armenian_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud_Lebanon08

Now here’s a challenge, taking an internationally renowned chef out for lunch… Should we go somewhere fancy, somewhere new…? How can I impress him? Raphael has traveled, Raphael knows, Raphael is a cook himself.

I followed my guts and I’m not sure why but I felt that he would like Onno, despite its location and street style feel… So off we went to discover the busy streets of Bourj Hammoud.

It was 2:30 PM on a Friday, I called and inquired if I could pass by for lunch. Raffi, who has been working at Onno for over 20 years, assured us we were welcome and waited for us to arrive.

Here is where the experience started… Raphael believes it was the best Lebanese/Armenian he has had to date in Lebanon.

Onno is a place you go to relax and enjoy some local jewels. Leave your ego home and come and enjoy the finest homemade food Lebanon has ever witnessed.

Onno_Lebanese_Armenian_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud_Lebanon29
“What would you like to drink?” Raffi asked. “Do you have any sparkling water?” With a proud sarcastic smile and a serious look he confirmed having the world’s best sparkling water, and it’s Armenian. I can honestly tell you that he was kind of right, Jermuk, named after the mountain spa town in Armenia, was a very good one indeed compared to the international names we know.

We then started to order, a plate from every section of the menu. Hommos with pine nuts, chicken liver, meat with cherry, fattouch, soubereg… Finally, he stopped and said, “Enough!” There was no room for arguing; “enough is enough for two people, so why throw food away?”

How many times have you seen a waiter do that? Bravo, Raffi.

What came next was two hours where we enjoyed some really good food. Some authentic, unsophisticated flavors of what real Armenian cuisine is all about. Fattouch, cooked vegetables, tabbouleh, meat… I’m finding it hard to tell you how happy we were, looking at each other, Raphael and I, in awe and amazement.

Onno_Lebanese_Armenian_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud_Lebanon36
Raphael fell in love with the fattouch and it’s dressing. I wanted to surprise him by asking Raffi to give us the recipe for the dressing and without any hesitation, he told me how to do it and went down to the kitchen and got me some to take home. I gave it to Raphael – you should have seen the look on his face… He was so happy to be able to take home some of this green gold.
Onno_Lebanese_Armenian_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud_Lebanon35
Before going into the details of the food, I have to tell you a little something that happened during lunch. Raphael looked at Raffi and expressed his appreciation and fascination towards the food….Proudly, Raffi answered that he has been working here for the last 20 years or so and that Onno is one of the best restaurants in town.
“Do you know Anthony Bourdain?” he asked, “He came here and wrote about the food. And not only that… Have you heard of that famous No Onions Garlic guy? He gave us a 19/20 on the food.”
Wow, I felt a shiver, a bizarre feeling, he was talking about me and was not aware I was actually there. I didn’t know how to react. Raffi was so proud of Onno and I can say he was totally right.

The awesome food:

  • The hummus is served hot, different from all other Lebanese restaurants. It is soft and tender and tastier than any other hummus in town. Grilled warm fried pine nuts and almonds are poured on top of it with their fried juices adding a perfect, heavenly touch. You will enjoy softness and a crunchy feel in one bite that will make you close your eyes and moan. I fell in love with this dish.
  • The chicken liver is one of kind. I don’t know how they do it, but it tastes nothing like the Lebanese one we know. Soft like butter and extremely juicy, each bite gets you closer to addiction.
  • Easy and pleasant to eat, the fattouch is unique. Despite the large variety of dishes we ordered, Raphael fell in love with this salad, this one in particular. It is prepared in such a meticulous way where they use tomatoes, purslane, lettuce, cucumbers and fried bread which makes it just perfect. What makes it unique is the sauce. An equilibrium of pomegranate molasses, lemon, sumac, salt and olive oil, each enjoyed and combined with a certain unmatched subtlety. You really have to taste it to understand.
  • Soubereg is “THE” Armenian dish each and everyone has to taste it at least once in their life. This is a mouthwatering piece of magic. In my opinion it is an award winning dish – creative, tasty and innovative. I’m simply in love with it and Onno does it perfectly. Thin layers of puff pastry cooked with butter, cream and cheese.
  • Manti: I’m out of words… Close your eyes and feel every piece of tiny meat coated in crunchy bread, all floating in a bowl of laban. Wow! Small bits of meat and dough, cooked to perfection and bathing in a fresh Armenian laban bowl.
  • Cherry kebab is something out of this world: A gooey dark red cherry chutney that is satisfyingly sweet, mixed with tender and juicy lamb kebab and covered with crunchy fried cashew nuts and almonds. A really indescribable feeling in every bite.
  • Itch, the hot Armenian tabbouleh is a simple mix of burghol and tomatoes. Nothing to be compared with the Lebanese tabbouleh, even though they share the same name. This one was served hot, with or without bread and has a caché of its own. Take a bite and let it melt under your teeth while its flavors dissipate.
  • Quail eggs and bastorma: Heaven on a plate

Onno_Lebanese_Armenian_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud_Lebanon34

Onno is Onno. Onno offers perfectly tasty food where passion, dedication and love is enjoyed in every bite. You leave Onno happy and satisfied… You feel that all your senses have been attended to, with care and dedictation.

Onno is a must try…

And I really hope I won’t be getting any of those nonsense comments judging the place, service and decor…

Varouj: Not Bad… But Not Great

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud32

Varouj’s fame is second to none and visiting it was crucial to understanding the hype behind it. To tell you the truth, I was expecting to reach a large restaurant. After a long hour of searching, we finally found the place. It’s easy: go to the Foursquare app and find it on the map or simply reach the coral station facing Achrafieh and the Beirut River and ask… everybody knows Varouj.

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud27
We parked the car a couple of hundred meters away and started walking the tight streets of Bourj Hammoud. Keep your eyes open and Varouj will appear to the left, a red vitrine, one shop door and here you are at the most famous restaurant of the Armenian headquarters. Varouj has always been a reference, a place that pops up the first minute you want to have Armenian-Lebanese food. A small place with its high ceiling welcomes and a kitchen is nestled at the end. A Pepsi fridge, dark wooden chairs, plastic-covered tables and old art decorating the walls. Plates, rifles, a pelican, a shark, decorative metal plates… An old style decoration that has been here for ages.

So we sat, ordered Varouj’s own arak while a plate of pumpkin seeds landed on our table. Loved the arak! The old man, in a white shirt and a necktie approached us for the order. No menu, but a list of Lebanese specialties and he started reciting them one after the other before stopping and asking which we would like to try. Hummus with pine nuts, stuffed vine leaves, basterma, fattouch and labneh. While soft music played in the background, we started enjoying the vibes of the place. A single person, up on a high stool, prepares all the orders by himself. It looks like a sandwich counter but he manages to cook some fresh, good stuff.

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud05
Sir, can I ask you a question? What is Varouj, who is he, and why is it so famous?” I ask the old guy. With a sarcastic smile on his face, he looked at me and said, “With all due respect, people come here for the food and the good service not because of the name. I don’t have time to answer all those who come inquiring. And for the record, I am Varouj.”

Yes, I met Varouj, the famous Varouj, sitting on a chair next to the fridge watching OTV, making sure every detail is mastered to perfection. Thirty-four years of expertise, passion and love

And the food started landing on the table:

The fattouch was fresh and simple, lemon and sumac mixed with a selection of crunchy vegetables. Hummus was just simple: a straightforward and tasty hummus with no sophistication and no added flavors. I enjoyed it to the max. Roast beef is served in slices, eight slices of roast beef mixed with pistachio and fat. As good as it could be. The stuffed vine leaves have a homey feel to them that’s unique. A thin tender vine leave filled with a tender mix. A good one. The labneh was homemade as well, like all the rest, but it was too dull for my taste; more f like cream cheese than the labneh we know, I wasn’t amazed by it. Bemye bel zeit took me back down memory lane, I’d forgotten how it tasted since my grandma last cooked it ten years ago. If you like authentic Lebanese food and preparation, bemye is a must try. The mouhammara was not bad, I didn’t like the texture too much, it was done the Armenian way but I honestly prefer Mayass’ one.

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud16

I remembered what my wife told me more than year ago: “Varouj didn’t impress me much”.

I’ll be very honest and transparent without being pretentious and state that I liked the food but was not impressed. I was expecting to be amazed and wasn’t. I’ve definitely eaten better hummus, better stuffed vine leaves, better mouhammara and better labneh. Varouj is Varouj, I agree, but nothing to be compared with the other Armenian restaurants around the city.

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud18
After the starters, you’ll have to call Varouj and ask for the main plates. Mante, soubereg, chicken liver and soujok.
The soujok was sliced a centimeter thick and served in an oil bath surrounded with sliced tomatoes. Rich in flavor, it was good, juicy and tasty. I would personally prefer them with some tomato juice and less oil, making them unique and with an Armenian touch. Mmmm. But the best until now: the chicken liver, cut in little tiny bits mixed in oil and lemon juice; a premium mix of tenderness that I enjoyed so much. I was disappointed by the soubereg; it needs more life, more fun, more passion, more flavor. It was a cake of crunchy layers with a neutral cheese.

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud20

Best for last: Mante. On a large round plate was served a load of meatballs wrapped in toasted bread, floating in a mix of laban and tomato juice. This is Armenia’s pride, one of the most famous dishes around, and it was good, not great. My favorite is still the one at Mayrig where the bites are crunchier, the laban a served cold and the tomato juice on the side can be added with moderation.

My personal remarks:

  • Service is too slow
  • The plates are too small and not changed if you don’t ask
  • I was expecting food to amaze me: it was good, not great

Varouj_Restaurant_Bourj_Hammoud22

I was scared to annoy Mr.Varouj so I tried to stay as discrete as I could, taking notes calmly and asking for everything with a smile and a polite tone. That is Varouj, I finally did it and can stop thinking about it. Now I know what it is and know what to answer if asked which is the best Armenian in town. It’s not right to make comparisons. Varouj is not Mayrig, not Onno and not Mayass, Varouj is a mix of Lebanese and Armenian served in a Lebanese-style restaurant.

When I asked for the bill, Varouj came himself and asked for 85,000L.L. No bill, no receipt, that’s his personal accounting way depending on the customer’s look and attitude.I enjoyed my lunch, or maybe the experience behind it, and left with a smile on my face.

Osaka, Sushi Lounge: A Step Forward in Oriental Innovation

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut46

Considered in the top three best Japanese restaurants in Lebanon, Osaka has been on my to do list for a long time now. Last visited in March of 2012, everything has changed for the better… Today’s lunch was exceptional on all levels.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut58
We arrived for a late lunch, around 2:30 PM and Osaka was busy, there was a large party on a number of tables who seemed to be having a good time. Choosing a corner as usual, I grabbed my phone and started taking some notes. The first impression I had were the high prices … but if the price scared me, the taste shut me up. Osaka Sushi Lounge, situated in the Kantari area of Beirut, at the entrance of Hamra Street, is one of the top five sushi restaurants in town. Osaka offers unequivocally the widest selection of sushi in Beirut. When it comes to quality sushi, freshness and taste, you are surely guaranteed an unforgettable dinning experience.

The architectural details:

  • The place is made up of a main dining space and another smaller one next to the entrance
  • Wood and black granite stones cover the floor
  • The space is filled with square, wooden tables surrounded by leather-covered chairs
  • The main item is the bar that’s situated in the middle of the restaurant where the sushi is meticulously rolled
  • Brown lanterns hang from the ceiling, lighting every table individually
  • The ambiance is simple with a fresh wood feel and many pieces of artwork decorating the space. Grey wallpaper covers some of the walls
  • Japanese writing on all the windows give the restaurant a more intimate ambiance, while light brown curtains artfully shade the interior
  • Red paintings hang on the walls
  • The ceiling is decorated with wood panels eliminating all chance of echoes
  • To the right, facing the bar, is the cashier and a wall covered in wood

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut27

The menu has been changed since my last review. Following one of my recommendations the menu is printed on a carton:

  • Appetizers
  • Salads
  • Tempura
  • Soups and Ramen
  • Sashimi
  • Sushi
  • Gunkan
  • Temaki
  • Futo Maki
  • Hoso Maki
  • Ura Maki
  • Boats and Special Plates
  • Main Courses
  • Teriyaki
  • Side Dishes
  • Desserts

We ordered:

  • Spicy Crispy Salmon Salad 24,000L.L: Salmon, special sauce and tempura flakes. A mountain of salmon covered with a generous mix of crisps mixed in mayonnaise and their special sauce is served on a wooden stand. A subtle, fine spiciness embracing a premium salmon makes you drule for a very tasty plate. A great first impression that put a smile on my face.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut25

  • Salmon Tataki 19,000L.L: Salmon, lemon, garlic, spring onions, and togarashi. That’s a majestic plate: Five slices of raw salmon, lightly cooked in their lemon juice. Served warm and tender like butter, they are decorated with garlic slices and lemon cubes while the spices add a hint of enjoyment. I pushed the garlic away and enjoyed a fine innovation, great for its simplicity. The textures, the aromas, the feel under the palate are all excellent.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut29

  • Salmon Skin Kawa Temaki 13,000L.L: Salmon skin with special sauce. Salmon skin temaki can become my index rating for Japanese restaurants because I order it everywhere. Two main criteria are to be considered: The quality and freshness of the nori and the dryness and mix of the salmon skin. Osaka’s is excellent, even superb. A super fresh nori is filled with a special mix of salmon skin that’s lightly crunchy while a subtle sauce adds the flavor, which I really enjoyed. It came with a small portion of rice, that was right size.

  • Orange Blossom Maki 20,000L.L: Salmon, avocado, crab, and mango. The mango, the quality of the rice, the juices, the finesse… simply extravagant. I’ll come back again just to have this dish again. Just look at it, beautifully rolled and meticulously presented. Every bite is enjoyable, as if it was a jewel. I was honestly amazed.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut36

  • Dynamite 22,000L.L: Salmon, tuna, Osaka special sauce, cucumber, eel, crab and sesame seeds. That was a good one.
  • Osaka Box Club 24,000L.L: Shrimp, tuna, salmon, avocado, and special sauce. One layer on top of the other, this is not a rolled maki but more like a crab cake. Thanks to the layers on top of each other, each bite looks like a piece of art created in Pantone colors. Juicy and tasty, I’ll simply say it was impeccable. No soy was needed, but a warm concentration of this cake’s juices helped us enjoy this unique innovation. What’s awesome is that every layer is felt distinctively and no flavor covers on its neighbor. I simply loved it.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut34

  • Dancing Eel 36,000L.L: Eel, crab, avocado, cucumber, sesame seeds, and teriyaki sauce. This roll will cost you 6,000L.L per piece and believe me, it’s worth every penny. Warmth, enjoyable bitterness, flavors, sweetness, and, to top it all, the sesame seeds give it a touch of finesse. Large pieces covered with thick layers of eel that melt under your teeth in an enjoyable carnival of flavors.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut41

  • Naked Roll 20,000L.L: Shrimp, tuna, crab, salmon, avocado, special sauce, and black Tobiko. A fresh piece, full of taste. That’s a simple one, yet very good.
  • Sea Scallop Sashimi 20,000L.L: Three pieces for 20,000 Liras, but I think it’s worth it. So fresh and so good, the quality is impeccable.

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut32

I was expecting to enjoy Osaka, but not to leave amazed. A place some have forgotten over the years is back, and back with a new menu and a new luxurious approach on sushi. No sauces and no sophistication, but flavors are trapped in every piece. I’ve had enough of those plates decorated with lines of sauce: in here, the rolls are simple and clear, without any need to sell you a design; the taste says it all.

The things I loved:

  • I liked the thickness and quality of the ginger
  • The presentation of the plates is so simple and so luxurious
  • The avocado deposited on the rolls gives it a unique touch of finesse
  • The presentation of the pieces makes them look like pieces of art
  • The quality of the ingredients is felt in every bite
  • The rice is excellent

The Ice Cream, Snowball Maki:

Chocolate vermicelli, six ice cream squares, a chocolate dip on two, three slices of orange, nuts and chocolate sauce, and two slices of lychee. Too sweet and doesn’t have anything to do with Japanese cuisine or maki. Disappointing for a dessert after what had gone before. I’d definitely use something with less sugar, and add a different texture. Why is it called Maki anyway?

Osaka_Lunch_Restaurant_Japanese_Tasty_Beirut51

What I didn’t like:

“Special sauce”? What is this special sauce found on almost all orders? Do they want everything to taste the same? People do have allergies and have the right to know what’s in your special sauce!

Osaka’s experience was unique, Japanese food at its finest. Nestled in the high-end category of fine Japanese restaurants, Osaka is, in my opinion, one of the top three Japanese restaurants in Lebanon. A must try for sure.

Yabani: New Location, New Look, New Menu – A Luxury Approach…

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut55

Yabani has a new address and of course with it comes a whole new look. Its first loctaion, designed by esteemed Bernard Khoury, was located in Achrafieh and accessed through a large elevator which takes you underground into the restaurant. Just a few weeks ago, Yabani, one of the first Japanese restaurants in town has moved into a more eclectic and modern space, designed by Riad Kamel, Architectes Anonymes, in the heart of Downtown Beirut.

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut57

Yabani, which was and still is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Lebanon has now been given a whole new look, decor and menu … today, I think, the space is second to none in town.

I had the chance to be one of the first guests to try the new Yabani. I won’t be going into too much tasting details tonight since it was the first time the kitchen operates. Despite that, the food was simply exquisite!

The place is incredible and worth looking into:

  • Reach a glass space, opened to the busy streets of Downtown Beirut from two sides
  • Grey concrete floors
  • At the entrance, a bar welcomes you before moving forward to the first dining space
  • A black column divides the space into two distinct dining areas
  • A high ceiling covered with glass panels makes the space look twice as big, while a large design chandelier pend from the ceiling
  • Wood is all over the place, decorating the walls, especially the high parts with parallel design panels
  • In the middle, the black metallic column is crafted and back-lit
  • Stairs take you to the restrooms: the most beautiful part of the restaurant and should not be missed.
  • A large piece of art of a Japanese knife, crafted in white marble, decorate the wall on the right.
  • Wooden tables fill in the space and have a grey stripe each decorating it. Grey fabrics design chairs surround them
  • To the left, from side to side is the rolling bar where a busy group of chefs prepare the orders
  • Take a look at the high walls, they are not to be missed. Dozens of layers of wood from different colors change the straight wall into a design piece
  • Light grey marble tiles are used everywhere adding class and finesse
  • Under the facing wall is a long bench
  • High glass facades give a view on the busy streets of Beirut

The food at Yabani is exquisite:

Tonight, we tried an average of 15 different choices out of 117 choice available on the menu. What’s more impressive in my opinion, is the fact that it was a pre-opening night and everything was just perfect.

  • The Chicken Salad mixed (003) with al dente cooked noodles was excellent. Served in a bowl with yuzu and mustard sauce, this salad redefines tasty food. I loved the crunchy black seeds enjoyed at the end of every bite.
  • The Scallop Tiradito (032) was impeccable, even more than exquisite. Thin sliced scallops marinated in Yuzu sauce and topped with rocotto chili and green coriander. With a hint of sea salt and just enjoy.
  • The King Crab salad (038) will make your heart skip a beat. A tiny little portion of pure enjoyment.
  • Even Salmon Sashimi (035) was unique. Mixed with chives, yuzu and ginger the salmon bites offer more than the taste we all know.
  • The Slow Cooked Salmon (040) and its spicy sour sauce was breathtaking. Juicy, light and cooked to perfection.
  • A plate that must be ordered is the Black Cod (042) which comes with a special miso paste marination. Three days of marination, long hours of cooking, caramelized layers, juicy heart and some mouthwatering sauce. Yumm…
  • After that came the Rock Shrimp tempura (039) served with a creamy spicy sauce. I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed its presentation. At Yabani, there is no cabbage filling the bottom of the bowls, just pure fish and enjoyment.
  • The Panko Salmon (062) may look like the crispy salmon salad we all know but this one has a touch of finesse that comes with an upscaled sauce. I loved it.

(048) Grade 7 Wagyu Beef: If you think you’ve eaten the best and most flavorful meat on earth, you’re mistaken. And if you think you know what tender and soft meat feels like, then think again…  at $100 a piece, served cut in cubes, I’ve had the finest meat imaginable. For added pleasure, add a hint of sea salt and rediscover food.

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut56

Afterwards, maki rolls followed then some Yabani special rolls.

Tonight, every dish has been mastered to perfection at Yabani. Every ingredient is unique, every mix is calculated, every color and texture has its place on the plate. Some ingredients have been imported from different parts of the world just to please the demanding clientele seeking perfection -  meat from Japan, ice cream from the Bahamas… and more…yes, Yabani’s menu is not like anything Lebanon has ever offered before.

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut36

Let’s dessert: I wasn’t a big fan of the Yabani’s ice cream munchkins “The Mochi Ice-Cream” that were cut in three parts,  filled with average ice cream. Although what is served now do share the same name, they are tastier and better. Cut in two, every piece is filled with flavorful ice cream and a chewy envelop that will remind you of Rice Halawa sold at local sweet shops. A great way to end dinner in style.

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut53

The details I liked:
  • Welcome to a luxurious Japanese restaurant.
  • There are no photos on the menu just 117 orders in numbers
  • I admire the fact that they don’t use any of those ugly plastic green leaves
  • The decor is breathtaking
  • The waiters are well trained and professional
  • The restrooms are a must see to. Discover an architectural innovation up the stairs

Yabani_Japanese_Restaurant_New_Location_Beirut10

Preparing itself for a grand opening, Yabani’s new look and new approach will definitely make noise in town. I will be passing by for a detailed review within the weeks to come, meanwhile enjoy the photos and give us your opinion if you decide to give it a try.

Prune: Where Simplicity is Mastered to Perfection

Coming back to Prune was a necessity… I’ve been hearing very positive feedback about Prune for a while, so reviewing it again, and enjoying its great food, was common sense.

Let me tell you a story before we start. A friend of mine, and a fan of NGNO, has been making it a point to question all my reviews. Every time I tell him about a positive experience, his answer is always “I don’t think so, I’ll have to try it.” Up until last week, for the first time, he calls me to admit that I was right about Prune; “You are right, Prune is excellent, I’ve eaten well. Good food and an impressive dessert,” he said.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon30

The ambiance at night is a true French bistro, fully booked and lively. It was amazing. People definitely come here for the food and the positive vibes.

The architectural details:

  • Reach a one door shop and be welcomed by a black steel vitrine. Metallic shelves display homemade food items of which prunes compote and prune jam
  • A long place with the kitchen door is at its very end
  • A spiral stair case adds a majestic feel to an industrial space. Use it to reach the bathrooms
  • A vintage feel all around – including the black stained mirrors, black steel, and marble details
  • The restaurant glass facade is typically French displaying some of the best items on the menu, all written creatively on the glass
  • Look down, the wine cellar is a oil change hole transformed from the days this shop was a mechanic shop
  • The floor is kept in its natural state, grey concrete with white stones
  • The high ceiling with dimmed yellow lighting is filled with hundreds of items that make it look like a piece of art. You can’t stop looking around, as you’ll keep on discovering things
  • At the end, the restaurant hosts a bar where bottles, set up on the shelves suspended from the ceiling, act as decoration
  • The place is filled with square white marble tables covered by paper placemats and surrounded with black wooden chairs and brown leather cushions
  • To the left, along the wall, black and white images decorate the space. Along the wall is a long light burgundy leather bench
  • To the right, one single large image is a group of wine makers from the late fifties
  • Four suspended chandeliers hang above the tables giving just the right amount of light

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon05

The menu:

  • Les salades
  • Les entrées
  • Quelques classiques du bistro
  • Nos huîtres
  • Grillades et plats
  • Moules et frites
  • Nos petits plus
  • Les desserts
  • Les ardoises

We ordered a lot, a bit of everything… And yes I was hungry.

The wine we chose with our meal: Lamotte Robin, Graves 2010; Predominantly Merlot, with a splash of the Cabernet brothers, this approachable Graves offers deliciously ripe and superbly smooth berry fruit, underpinned by a hint of earthiness, a firm backbone and a touch of toasty vanilla oak. A bright and silky finish, follows subtle notes of cherries and stewed fruit. make this a perfect wine to drink alongside poultry in a creamy sauce, or roast duck

Let’s enjoy some real good food:

  • The Goat’s cheese salad was different. I personally had enough of the toasted bread topped with goat cheese. Prune’s salad is served in a bowl, generously filled and mixed with prunes, lettuce and cherry tomatoes. The goat cheese is crumbled on top with a premium balsamic vinegar that couples sour and sweet flavors. As you think the experience is coming to an end, the crunch of walnuts adds the touch of finesse you expect. A food salad indeed

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon10

  • The king crab salad: A layer of rocket leaves, a generous portion of fresh crab and a strong lemony seasoning mixed with salt and pepper bits. It’s a fresh, yet simple salad that I recommend you try.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon11

  •  The foie gras, what else… My favorite in town. I really loved the foie gras the first time I came here so much that I ordered a 1kg portion for New Year’s Eve and Christmas last year. I’m not sure if Prune is still selling this foie gras to take away, but think of it as an option to consider. A pure foie gras full of flavors, no after taste and no lingering smell. Served with a chutney that has a light sweetness

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon18

  • Serrano with occidental melon: As simple as it is tasty. A soft, buttery sweet melon topped with thinly sliced, chewy ham. What a mix of textures as well as flavors that and sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon15

  • The fresh artichoke salad with Granny Smith apples is one of those new tastes, Prune has introduced to the country. A generous mountain of lettuce and rocket mixed with crunchy, fresh uncooked artichokes and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples to add some sweetness as well as crunchiness that’s really good. Maybe the simplest of salads, but my favorite if I had to choose.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon20

So… done with the starters, let’s move to the main plates. I was eagerly waiting to try the escalope and tagliatelle.

  • The XL escalope made me smile. I had it recently at Al Mandaloun and found it dry, too thin and too oily. Prune’s is thicker, fluffier, juicier, crustier and tasty, even the bread in had an interesting flavor. I would personally serve it with a creamy spinach sauce, which would make it perfect. So for now, squeeze the lemon on, cut a piece, spread some mustard and enjoy.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon27

  • Today’s special was the smoked salmon tagliatelle. A generous portion of pasta as well as generous number of salmon bites, all bathed in a creamy sauce. Al dente, the pasta was excellent. That was one of my favorite dishes and I ask for it for dinner every other week when staying at home.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon21

What a night! A great dinner, an enjoyable ambiance, lovely crowd… Everything to make you go back home happy.

  • For desserts, we started with a special ice cream: “Aspahan“. A creamy, rose loukoum, lychee and red fruits blend that has the color of bubble gum ice cream. It’s not a sorbet but a flavorsome ice cream that doesn’t have a sweet aftertaste.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon32

  •  Ouf! That’s the first expression you’ll make after tasting the tiramisu. Yes, Ouf! An excellent tiramisu that’s just perfect without any sophistication. Tiramisu as it should be .

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon34

  • Le Pain Retrouvé ... That’s not an Ouf, but more of a WOW! “Un sans faute”. Yes, officially the best Pain Perdu in Lebanon. Le Pain Retrouvé: Two large bricks of bread covered with caramel sauce and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Slightly crunchy on the outside while softer and more tender on the inside, filled with milk, butter and sugar that blend perfectly together. Some almonds decorate the plate, soaking up a caramel sauce that’s not sweet and rich in flavors. Two thumbs up .

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon40

  • Pears and Porto. You might want to close your eyes to handle the emotion. Two pears, cut in half, roasted, cooked, caramelized and bathing in Porto wine. While you crunch the pear, feeling the sweetness on your palate, the alcohol aromas erupt, going straight up to your brain tickling all your nerve endings.

Prune_Restaurant_Beirut_Lebanon49

A great dinner on all fronts. Today’s experience was exquisitely filled with passionate moments and discoveries. How amazing it is to enjoy good food and outstanding creations prepared by passionate, hard working people. With every bite you will admire and appreciate the effort that has been put to satisfy your taste buds. I truly enjoyed Prune, a French bistro offering a delicious dining experience in a unique setting and soothing atmosphere.

Villa Clara’s: French Inspiration in the Heart of Beirut

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut63

I can’t explain the coincidences but Villa Clara took me so much time to be review due to my extensive traveling and it’s taken a while to be published. I visited Villa Clara more than three weeks ago and had to travel afterwards, so I didn’t have the luxury of time to write very much. I didn’t want it to be short or quick, because a place like Villa Clara deserves a detailed review. Returning from London, I remembered the night at Villa Clara.

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut06

An old house, dimmed lights, a few candles, a chandelier… The faint air flowing through a metallic sign made it squeak … tree leaves rustled at the floor… Old souvenirs, memories from the past… Located in the Mar Mikael area of Ashrafieh, surrounded by restaurants and art galleries, the Villa Clara Boutique Hotel is five minutes’ drive from Martyrs’ Square in Downtown Beirut.

The Architect, Ramy Boutros, created the charming atmosphere of this old home from the 1920s, where you can find carefully chosen pieces such as couches from the French Senate, or a zinc bar dating back to the same period. Mrs. Marie-Helene Gougeon gathered old tiling from traditional Lebanese houses that were being destroyed to pave the beautiful flooring. You will discover two outdoor areas, one for your cool hangouts, and a separate one for children, which is a small grass area with slides and toys, especially designed without steps or levels

Managed and owned by Chef Olivier Gougeon and his lovely wife, you are welcomed into their home for a fine dining experience blending extensive French knowhow with Lebanese hospitality.

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut07

The place’s little details:

  • Leave your car in the parking down the street and walk the few meters up to the hotel
  • Dimmed lights, chandeliers and candles welcome you into a cozy space and you’ll want to know what’s hidden inside
  • A metallic door than a wooden one, small enough when opened wide but you’ll have to push the left side open to enter easily
  • Inside is one large space, rectangular, with its high ceiling and orangey colors. Salmon colors decorate the walls while white with decorative flowers is found on others
  • Over your head, metallic birds seem to look over you. A bit creepy I think!
  • Overall, an enjoyable dimmed lighting, while our table was well lit by individual spots from above
  • Villa Clara’s restaurant seats 25 people on several large tables scattered around the room, creating a spacious feel. All tables are covered with thick white table cloth and decorated with a candle, a flower pot, a pepper mill, a salt cellar and a metallic oil container
  • Ceramic plates painted with flowers blend well with the place’s decoration and are protected by a fork and knife posed on the table napkin to the right side of the plate
  • A chimney occupies the right side of the restaurant

Some things you should know:

  • Villa Clara’s restaurant is closed on Sunday night
  • The menu is changed every day depending on the arrivals and the chef’s mood
  • Service is incomprehensibly slow; plates take too much time to come out of the kitchen and two waiters can’t do it by themselves, so breathe and relax, you will be eating before sunrise
  • Most ingredients are organic and freshly prepared from the family’s vegetable garden in the mountains where they also produce their artisanal ham and other products from the terroir

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut12

Today’s menu:

  • 13 starters (Four salads, snails, Foie Gras, a seafood platter, carpaccio…)
  • 14 Plates (Beef filet, duck confit, beef tartare, chicken roast…)

Dinner started with a loaf of bread cut in thick slices and delivered in the middle of the table; fresh bread with a rich smell and a condensed texture. I liked it, it was coupled with olives and fresh thyme while we ordered and prepared ourselves for Villa Clara’s renowned creations.

Let’s indulge in a fine French cuisine:
  • The Scampi (Langoustines): pealed and served warm, the scampis are well cooked and full of taste, served with fresh, homemade smoked salmon on the side. Those were served along with homemade walnut bread with chestnuts and dried raisins. The Smoked salmon, on the other hand, is just perfect; Free of oil, soft and with a subtle flavor of smokiness; a salmon that has a mouthwatering color and taste. A simple dish reinvented to be unique showing the finesse behind Villa Clara’s creations..

  • The Pan fried Foie Gras comes in two pieces and is served with a poached pear in red wine. The plate I ordered was simply excellent. Warm, with crunchy borders, every piece melts under your teeth like butter, erupting with a interesting, sweet aftertaste. Lovely textures and flavors combined into a redefined simplicity. I enjoyed it very much .

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut65

  • The octopus salad is a great way to start your dinner, my friend tells me. I personally didn’t taste it but he enjoyed its textures, generous portion size and spicy aftertaste.
  • Boudin noir:A dark-hued blood sausage, containing pork, pig blood, and other ingredients. Variants of the boudin noir occur in French, Belgian, Cajun and Catalan cuisine. My first introduction to Boudin Noir was at Yannick Alleno’s Terroir Parisien in June of 2012. Back then, I loved this creation that’s surely not for the faint hearted. I loved the crunchiness of the sausage envelop and the richness of the content. Tonight’s Boudin is a close replica, adding to that, caramelized fruits add the sweetness needed to neutralize the feeling of inner filling’s blood. The fruit texture is a bit annoying and too sticky, but as an overall experience this plate was good for me. .

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut66

  • We also ordered the veal and the grouper fish, which were as good as they should be. Fresh, juicy and tasty.

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut67

With the main plates, we were offered a gratin. A casserole approached our table and each one was served with a tiny portion of gratin already seen on other tables. I didn’t find that too appealing to say the least. For a table of 6, I think the casserole should have been dedicated to us, positioned in the middle of the table, especially since the potatoes mentioned on the menu were not sent.

A meal is not complete without trying a chef’s desserts:
  •  Hot baba cake with rum and whipped cream: That was the first time I taste a hot baba au rum. Served in a round plate, a portion of cake is floating in rum and accompanied with whipped cream on the side. I personally didn’t like it at all. Heating the rum is a guarantee for a stomach acid burn while the cream melts unpleasantly. Not a successful innovation in my opinion

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut69

  • The dark chocolate mousse is rich and enjoyable. That’s something innovative and mouthwatering. A rich texture and a strong dark chocolate felt in every bite.
  • What made a superb last impression, making us forget about the small imperfections during dinner, was the giant mountain of meringue. Meringue is not the easiest of things to prepare sometimes gives off a bad, repulsive smell only professionals know how to master. This meringue was extremely tasty, beautifully presented and worth coming back for. Light crunchiness and subtle creaminess where every bite takes you on a journey around the world .

Villa_Clara_Restaurant_Beirut68

The things I enjoyed:
  • The food was good specially the langoustine, the Foie Gras and the walnut bread
  • The meringue dessert is to die for
  • I liked how the tartare was prepared live by the chef himself
What I’ll improve:
  • I’m not a fan of the “changing the menu everyday” concept: when customers love something, they’ll come for it again and again.
  • The menu contains four salads, but they weren’t grouped together and many meat items separated by fish dishes. It’s not a menu easy to browse.
  • I respect using the French language in a French restaurant but would think that half the Lebanese population doesn’t read this language. A translation on the menu is a must.
  • A place like that should have a thick, well presented menu, not a piece of paper decorated with oil spots.
  • The attitude: can we be more welcoming, joyful and simpler around here. There’s heaviness in the air that’s better given an escape route.
  • I think it might be slightly overpriced for what it is.

I’m going to be honest, hoping not to be misunderstood. I came here expecting to discover one of the finest restaurants in town, one of the remaining few that serve some really good French cuisine. I believe that Villa Clara’s food can be better; I enjoyed my experience but was not amazed. Something is just missing; something could move those plates from good to excellent. The knowhow is there, the will is there… but something’s missing.

For the price paid… The welcoming could be warmer, the service could be better, the portions should be bigger, the menu could be clearer, the plates and the offerings could be more generous… I believe that Villa Clara can be rated the best on all levels with only an open mind to improvement. I encourage you to try it out and I’ll personally be coming for more soon… and maybe visiting their rooms and farm up the mountains.

Y. by Yabani: Reinvented Perfection at the Souks

What an improvement since I last visited Y. by Yabani almost two years ago! I remember walking into a badly finished white space, to be welcomed by untrained staff and having to browse a paper menu without any photos. Today, on a Sunday, coming in with a group of 12 people to enjoy a casual lunch, I changed my mind on many levels. The food was good, the staff welcoming and the ambiance up to the standard of an upscale, casual Japanese diner.

Y_Yabani_Japanese_Downtown_Beirut_Souks26

It was pure coincidence that I visited two of Yabani’s restaurants in a single week. But doing so made me compare and reassure myself that the same supreme quality and taste are served at both venues, the casual one in Beirut Souks and the upscale fine dining in Downtown Beirut… Y. using the same quality for a lower price.

Menu Sections:

  • Salads and Starters
  • Hot Dishes
  • Izuzukuri
  • Beef Items
  • Special Tuna
  • Chirashis
  • Sashimi
  • Nigiri Sushi
  • Gunman Sushi
  • Y Special Maki
  • Hozo Maki
  • Crazy Maki
  • Ura Maki
  • Desserts

Y_Yabani_Japanese_Downtown_Beirut_Souks11

The place in few lines:

  • Located in the street between Librairie Antoine and La Cave De Joel Robuchon, Y is a small trendy place with a simple and casual decoration
  • Wide glass facades keep the restaurant open to the souk’s ambiance
  • Choose to sit on the terrace or inside in the air conditioned space
  • A long bar can seat a dozen, set up with a line of blue high chairs
  • Square tables fill in the space, surrounded by light wooden chairs
  • The floor is covered with a light concrete-colored, polished material
  • The place’s general feel is white, decorated with squares of glass cubes covering the floor and walls
  • Relaxing reflections and simplicity create a casual diner that fits the mall ambiance

Y_Yabani_Japanese_Downtown_Beirut_Souks19

Without going into a detailed food review, be assured that lunch was excellent. We had a bit of everything, orders to cover all the menu, and everything was just as good as you would expect it to be. A tasty rice, premium fresh fish fillings, smooth sauces, crunchy, crisp, fresh nori leaves and overall creations that are up to the standard of this fine diner. Twelve people ate, laughed, drank and enjoyed a fun Sunday lunch with two bottles of white wine, all of that for $50 per person. If a comparison is to be made, we could have paid the same or more at any of the cafes down the alley and surely would have eaten less.

I still remember until now the panko tuna and salmon bowl, their freshness and soft cubes of fish that melt under your teeth like butter. The imperial eel, one of my favorite pieces, has a richness that’s unique, a freshness that will put a smile on your face and a rice that’s really cooked to perfection. The crazy shrimp, a simple order, turned out to be appreciated… The temaki, richly and generously filled with fish and wrapped in a crunchy, fresh nori leaf. Honestly, not a single item deceived me.

I still can’t believe this change and improvement, putting back Y. on the map, competing with all the casual diners out there. Playing in the middle category and despite his location in a mall, Y. is a restaurant to be considered for a dinner or even a lunch with friends.

Y_Yabani_Japanese_Downtown_Beirut_Souks36

I Liked:

  • The staff’s professionalism and attention
  • The pieces decoration and size
  • The complementary wet towels distributed at the end
  • The menu, available on white iPads, protecting the environment by avoiding the use of paper
  • I found the prices reasonable for the quality offered

Finishing with perfumed hot towels left a great impression. I would love to come back to Y., keeping in mind that some places offer a “fine restaurant” quality in a casual ambiance. I think the photos will speak for themselves and show my true feelings about today’s lunch.

Captain Davis: A Successful Concept in the Making

Captain Davis opened a week ago and already this new eatery has created a buzz for itself around town. Enticed by the mouthwatering images I saw on Facebook and Instagram I had to be one of the first people to go down to Sin El Fil and try it. A big yellow sign facing Antoine Library cannot be missed. The beautifully designed logo of Captain Davis will welcome you into a uniquely designed space where good food is served at affordable prices.
Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil28
Captain Davis is the latest American diner to open in town specialized in burgers and steaks, serving Angus beef patties and some specialties new to this country.
Who’s captain Davis:
Davis Fletcher of Athens, Texas have invented the hamburger. According to oral histories, in the 1880s, he opened a lunch counter in Athens and served a Burger of fried ground beef patties with mustard and Bermuda onion between two slices of bread; with a pickle on the side. In 1904, Davis and his wife Ciddy ran a sandwich stand at the St. Louis World’s Fair.
We reached a beautifully lit space, walked a couple of stairs up where large glass facades welcome you into a modern square shaped restaurant filled with thick high-end wooden tables surrounded by a variety of metallic grey, black and red chairs. The place is really a work of art. The ceiling is covered in wood while the floors are in grey concrete tiles. An interesting touch is added on the walls, where black and white vintage images are hung.
You can’t help but notice the small details added to the places interior…. the lamps pending from the ceiling, the beautiful bar, the indirect lighting, the mini flower pots, the small terrace… I stood amazed by the mix of simplicity turned into a piece of art.
Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil35
The menu at Captain Davis is divided into many sections including starters, burgers and buns, specialities, from the grill, extras, desserts and drinks. Owned and managed by Ziad Corban, the place is definitely a place to consider for your next outing.
We were welcomed by the crew, a team of aviators each in his rank, introducing us to this new concept. Cheese and thyme sticks landed on our table as we waited to be served. Their signature bites include “El Sombrero Burger” for the spicy sensations lovers, the unique “Manzanita Tuna Burger”, a premiere for me, or go for the simple cheese burger. Only Angus meat is used and buns from Prunelle.
I was too excited and ordered two burgers for myself. I wanted to try Captain Davis’ meat and their tuna burger which intrigued me. Dinner was exceptional…
Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil09
The food is beautifully presented on wood boards… your mouth will water just by looking at the food being served. At Captain Davis it’s not the size that matters but the perfection of how different ingredients are used and blend together with moderation and love.
Let’s taste some fine diner food:
  • Davis Pepperoni L.L7,250: Served on a white round plate, toasted puff pastry is covered with melted cheese and pepperoni cubes. That’s what I called, redefined simplicity at its finest. Every bite is crunchy and full of taste. You will enjoy a combination of textures. Crunch, melt, bite and enjoy… Bravo for this creation.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil48

  • Spicy Chicken bites L.L8,750: Haven’t we had enough chicken strips served all around the country? But trust me, the ones served at Captain Davis’ are different. Using chunks of chicken makes the envelop crunchier and the inner core juicier. Served in red bowl, these chicken bites comes with a lemony spicy sauce that makes all the difference as it ignites flames of fun under your palate. Start by enjoying the chicken by itself followed by the second with some dip. You’ll understand the fame of this starter. Hot and enjoyable on all levels.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil15

  • Manzanita Tuna Burger L.L14,250: (Fresh tuna, herbed caper mayonnaise, lettuce) Let’s start by the tuna followed by the meat burgers, I said to myself. The same bun is covered with mayonnaise mixed with capers than topped with a small piece of lettuce followed by a generous piece of tuna. Some real sashimi tuna cooked to perfection, leaving the inner heart slightly red. Despite being cooked, the tuna remains juicy, enjoyed with the brioche bun. I loved how creative this bite is, how enjoyable this burger is and most importantly no fish flavor is felt. If you’re not a meat eater and want to enjoy a burger? That’s the next big thing, I imagine many will copy.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil43

  • Blue Almighty L.L16,250: (beef patty, bacon, blue cheese, iceberg, tomatoes). Simply exceptional; Imagine a slight crunchiness of the bun, chewy fried bacon, strong blue cheese taste and the same perfectly cooked meat. What a burger! I loved the generosity of the cheese, the way bacon is cut in chunks and the juiciness of the meat all served in a perfect bun

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil45

  • El Sombrero Burger L.L16,750: (Beef patty, grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, iceberg, guacamole) It was my favorite if I may say. Blending together guacamole with jalapeños and thin sliced vegetables makes of this burger a guaranteed trip to Mexico in every bite. With its strong spiciness, this burger is not for the faint at heart. I personally loved it and recommend it to all.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil44

While enjoying our dinner, a man, who was welcoming and very polite approached us. He was dressed exactly like the other waiters, only that he’s the owner. I liked this point. Ziad Corban, the owner, works exactly like his teammates and most importantly listens and searches for his customers comments.

Some tasting notes:
  • The meat is good… even very good: Adequately fatty, doesn’t slide or squeak under your teeth, perfectly cooked with no red traces and juicy
  • 150grams of rich beef, thin and enjoyable
  • The bun, produced by the famous Prunelle, melts under your teeth like butter
  • The sauces are mastered to perfection, each filled with tons of passion and dedication

It has been a long time since I have done my “Cold Meat Test”. Twenty minutes after serving, the meat eaten alone was still enjoyable – it was not elastic, not fatty, and the taste was not synthetic and there was no Worcester sauce aftertaste. A test passed successfully.

The things I loved:
  • The burgers don’t spill out. Each is enjoyed with class and finesse
  • Look closely as each burger is served with a different kind of bread. At Captain Davis, every detail counts
  • If you’re not a fan of coleslaw, no problem, as three different salads are proposed
  • Chips or potato wedges, it’s your choice
  • Refined burgers the casual way
  • Just enjoy the burgers as they are. No additional condiment is needed
  • The chips are excellent and a must try
I think that Captain Davis managed to create refined burgers, served in a casual way.
Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil38
After such a good dinner, you wouldn’t want to skip dessert:
  • Apple Davis L.L5,250: Just imagine and dream: An enjoyably chewy, caramelized dough  covered with apple slices, soft like butter, adequately sweet, mixed with cloves, moist and tender. Every bite leaves an enjoyable aftertaste that lingers in your mouth for five minutes guaranteed. This is a very good dessert.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil49

  • Chocolate Heaven L.L4,500: A simple chocolate cake made from premium callebaut dark chocolate.  No sophistication. I would have personally added a kind of twist to it, making it a signature item.

Captain_Davis_Burgers_Diner_Sin_El_Fil50

I’ll change:
  • The potato wedges need some fine tuning. Homemade and nicely covered with paprika, but the skin is too thick and the inside is too condensed and hard
  • I would like to have a free refill draft Pepsi policy in a diner
  • Portions look a bit small especially the starters and desserts

If you’re looking to hangout with your friends in a nice venue where good food is served at affordable prices, then Captain Davis is the place to visit. I certainly enjoyed the experience on all levels. Enjoy the photos until you decide to give it a try.

More from Captain Davis… Trying the Whole in a Week

Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions43
If you’ve been following NoGarlicNoOnions for the last two years or so, you would have noticed that I usually don’t review the same restaurant twice in row… I usually give at least a six months period between one visit and next. For the first time ever, in only 48 hours, I decided to come back again to Captain Davis, the latest diner to open in Sin el Fil. I wanted to come and discover the whole menu, which revealed a whole new approach towards American food, burgers and diner style food.
Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions02
Captain Davis can not be compared to any place in town. It is not your usual diner but a place that has revisited some renowned dishes in a creative way… Every bite is enjoyed as if it’s the last. Prepare yourself for something new.
On Monday, my wife and I were impressed by the quality of the burgers, the professionalism of the service, and the finesse of the desserts… all served in a beautiful and cozy diner that irradiates class. On Wednesday, we insisted on coming back here with some friends  to enjoy a bigger variety of choices of burgers, sandwiches and some of Captain Davis’ signature plate. Everything was as good as the first time.
We reached at 09:15pm to a fully booked restaurant. It was amazing to see a newly opened place become popular in less than two weeks. I was happy to learn later that three of the tables were NGNO followers on Instagram. We enjoyed the same welcoming into a creative space where positive vibes was felt… I personally only asked for the windows to be closed to avoid the outside noise.
Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions01
PS: Before saying if you like the burger or not comparing it to the ones you’ve already tried, remember that burgers are to be classified into four large groups, each unique in its class and not comparable to the other: Fast food, street food, diner and gourmet.
We ordered one of each starter:
  • Cheese Croquettes L.L7000: A handful of cheese balls filled with three different types of cheese, Emmental, Parmesan and cheddar are served in a small bowl. Breaded on the outside and non oily, these bites are as good as you would expect them to be. A slight crunch of the envelope followed by some melting smooth cheese that caresses your palatal buds in style.
  • Davis Pepperoni L.L7,250L.L: Served on a white round plate, toasted puff pastry is covered with melted cheese and pepperoni cubes. That’s what I call simplicity at its finest. Every bite is crunchy and full of taste. You will enjoy a combination of textures.
  • Spicy Chicken Bites L.L8,750L.LUsing chunks of chicken makes the envelope crunchier and the inner core juicier. Served in a red bowl, these chicken bites come with a cayenne pepper lightly spicy sauce that makes all the difference as it ignites flames of fun under your palate. Start by enjoying the chicken by itself followed by the second with some dip. You’ll understand the fame of this starter.
  • Bacon Baked Potatoes L.L9,500L.L: How nice! It was love at first bite. Thin sliced baked potatoes covered with chunks of crispy bacon topped with melted cheese. Dip it into some sour cream and enjoy. If you think you’re done, just give it couple seconds where the salty aftertaste takes you by storm. I loved it. This appetizer is created with such  know-how. It is simple, unique and mouthwatering.

Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions10

The appetizers are great. We enjoyed the same taste and flavor we did 48 hours ago. With were then ready to plunge into the main course. Sandwiches, burgers and plates were just waiting to be devoured.

On the menu today:
  • The Triple B Burger L.L15,500: Beef patty, bacon, barbecue sauce, tomatoes, pickles, iceberg. A juicy piece of meat with a nice barbecue taste placed on a premium bun with a thin slice of tomato and a small piece of iceberg lettuce. Exquisite if I may say.
  • Philly Steak L.L11,750: Beef, bell peppers, onions, Swiss cheese. If you think that burgers are the Captain’s specialty, think again. Captain Davis created a new version of the ‘casual’ sandwiches. Please, do not compare them with anything else. Crunchy premium brown bread from Prunelle loaded with amazing ingredients, various tastes, herbs and mixes. This is not a street food sandwich but something unique and extraordinary. Super tender beef mixed with crunchy cooked vegetables… the cheese appears at the end of every bite…Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions21
  • Asian Beef Sandwich L.L13,750: Marinated beef stripes, coconut oil, peanut butter, red curry paste, cilantro, red cabbage, onions. That’s innovation. Just imagine some nicely marinated beef stripes mixed with a hundred flavors from the four corners of Asia. To add even more perfection, they have added some peanut butter and some crunchy peanuts in the mix. Exceptional. Bravo Chef.
  • Manzanita Tuna Burger L.L14,250: Fresh tuna, caper with herbs mayonnaise and lettuce. Despite being cooked, the tuna remains juicy, enjoyed with the brioche bun. I loved the creativity of this bite. This burger is enjoyable and the best part the fish taste is fresh and subtle. If you’re not a meat eater and want to enjoy a burger? This is the next big thing, I imagine many will copy.
  • Lamb Chops L.L31,750: Wedge potatoes, mixed vegetables and herbs. Five lamb chops beautifully presented one next to the other. Juicy, tender,  exceptionally flavorful…

Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions43

Let’s have some dessert. One of each please:
  • Chocolate Heaven L.L4,500:  A simple piece of chocolate cake made using premium Callebaut dark chocolate.  Simple and tasty. Place a piece on your tongue and press it up your palate… Feel the different layers, the different ingredients, the  chocolate… the love and passion.
  • Apple Davis Tart L.L5,250: Finesse and perfection has been redefined here… Just imagine and dream: An enjoyably chewy, caramelized dough covered with apple slices, soft like butter, adequately sweet, mixed with cloves, moist and tender. Every bite leaves an enjoyable aftertaste that lingers in your mouth for five minutes guaranteed. This is a very good dessert that doesn’t even need a vanilla ice cream on the side.
  • Captain Cheese Cake L.L5,750: Everyone was amazed by this mouthwatering cake. Every layer of it – the crunchy biscuits, the creamy non fatty cheese and the tasty unsweetened sauce. Yum…

Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions38

  • Drunk’n Lovers, Mini Baba L.L5,500: Light, juicy, soft and moist, I personally loved them. The bites are juicy but don’t have the strong rum taste. I’ll add the some more rum or serve it with a shot on the side.
  • Crazy Carrot Cake L.L4,250: The carrot cake is moist and tasty. Every bite hides of this cupcake-shaped heaven hides some crunchy bits of carrots. The frosting is tasty and I enjoyed the cinnamon aroma.
The things I’ll improve:
  • Smoking is not allowed so why those ashtrays? These have to be replaced with others without the cigarette support. They diminish the restaurant’s original decor
  • Always keep the windows closed
  • The coleslaw is light yet dull and needs some oomph. I am not sure what it is
  • Serve the baby rhum cakes with a rum shot on the side

Captain_Davis_NoGarlicNoOnions42

The things I enjoyed:
  • On an LCD, a food channel was playing in silent mode. You can read the subtitles  if interested
  • The fries are now perfect. Crunchy envelope and the inside is juicier
This is my second time in a week and I personally loved it.
Value for Money:
  • On Monday we paid $25/person and ate like kings
  • Today for $28/person and we had 4 starters, 6 main courses, 5 desserts and drinks
  • Premium quality at affordable prices

Hoping and wishing it will stay as is for the many years to come…

Sunday Brunch at Casablanca: Indulge in Some Heavenly French Toast

Way before becoming a trend around the country, Casablanca was known for its brunch every Sunday. Opening at 11am you are welcomed to savor Casablanca’s fine organic preparations in the iconic setup located on the top floor of a traditional villa, right on the Corniche. Casablanca is known for using all organic products – eggs, vegetables, jams and cheese as well as many creations, all produced in-house.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon02
We arrived at 11am into this old house which looks so different lit by the fresh sunny light of a beautiful spring morning. A mix of colors, a blend of design items and a staff that’s ready to serve you with a hefty breakfast, a filtered coffee or a double espresso, it’s perfect. The most popular items are the Eggs Benedict and omelets as well as bagels, pastries, pancakes and a yogurt bowl mixed with fresh fruits.

Sit back, relax and take a moment to enjoy the details of Casablanca:

  • The high ceiling eliminates the chance of any possible claustrophobic feeling
  • To the right, next to the stairs, is a long bar filled with bottles
  • The white arched walls remind you that you are in an old Lebanese house
  • The red light, blinking on the street, projects its shadow on the internal walls of the restaurant
  • Two walls are painted in red while the two others are covered in blue. Yellow takes over the inner space
  • The floor is still kept in it’s naturally rustic marble style
  • Facing the bar, on the blue side, a large painting decorates the main restaurant wall
  • All the tables are square and made of wood, while the chairs and benches are heavy metallic structures
  • Different designs, different ideas and many colors, the chairs are many
  • At the back, on the left side of the stairs is the kitchen door, cut in half in a funky way
  • Casablanca is on a plane of its own

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon09

Casablanca is run by Beirut’s legendary Johnny Farah and his wife, who concentrate on the style and quality of East-meets-West fusion food. Mrs. Farah was here today, sitting calmly at the bar and making sure everything is taken care of as it should be.
Open the orange pages and check the menu. Casablanca’s breakfast proposes a large choice of items and I wished I could order them all.

The wide choice of items:

  • Free-range Eggs
  • Omelets
  • Free-range Yogurt
  • Fresh Juice
  • Bagels, Toasts and Pancakes
  • Cocktails
  • Coffee and Tea

I ordered filtered coffee; I received an individual portion of coffee and a porcelain cup. Even the coffee is special, a light mix, filtered smoothly and enjoyable to the last sip. Food started landing on the table, plate after plate while my camera took the time to immortalize the moments.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon20
Let’s enjoy breakfast at Casablanca:
  • Eggs Benedict: On a thick English muffin comes a large piece of thick grilled Canadian ham topped with a poached egg and covered with hollandaise sauce. The bun is excellent, pleasantly chewy, the Canadian ham thick grilled and full of taste with an interesting texture, the eggs perfectly cooked but the sauce… It was a disappointment; Too watery and lacking in flavor. The hollandaise should have had a more prominent flavor, more lemon, more pepper more consistency and surely more body. The sauce spoiled the dish!

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon48

  • Scrambled or Sunny Side Up: The scrambled eggs were served with a toasted muffin on the side while the sunny side up was served with toasted bread. The simplicity of those dishes made them unique for their kind. A nice color, a juicy texture and some fresh vegetables to accompany them. I enjoyed them and so did the kid.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon43

  • In the middle, we were served a bagel filled with cream cheese with fig jam on the side. The bagels are provided by Bread Republic, fresh, but a bit chewy as for the fig jam, this is something worth talking about. A rich and natural homemade fig jam mix where the purity of the fruit is felt in every bite. A beautiful texture, the seeds, the envelop, the sweetness… Bravo.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon27

  • Salmon Bagel: One of the best salmon cuts out there is served in a bagel delivered the same day -at least that’s what I believe. Cream cheese and salmon in a fresh bun is an interesting breakfast and one of the lightest proposed that day.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon51

  • Pancakes: I might have expected a tower of pancakes with different layers but what I received was beautiful enough to activate all my senses. A stunning, large pancake covered with a mix of fruits. One single thick pancake soaked in maple syrup and covered with cut fruits. It reminded me of my last trip to London. A mouthwatering and tasty pancake I can recommend. Just look at the colours, they speak for themselves.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon49

  • Yogurt: I’d already eaten a lot but something inside made me want to order the yogurt. Strawberry, raisin, mandarin, apple, banana and mango. I am not a fan of yogurt and rarely feel like ordering it, but Casablanca’s are different. This is not the acidic European version of yogurt but our local Laban served next to some honey and fruits. Wow! I never thought Laban tasted so good with fruits. Honestly: It put a smile on my face. An addictive combination I had to finish entirely.

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon29

  • French Toast: When the plate landed in front of me, I was in awe. A round plate filled with a rectangular piece of thick bread and meticulously decorated with a mix of bananas, apples and strawberries. Around it and covering it, maple syrup gave it the flavor it needed. That’s a dessert I loved, I say a dessert cause naming it a French toast makes it loose its sumptuousness. A thick premium bread topped and stacked with maple syrup, slightly crunchy on the borders and chewy inside, married with the fruits made of it an unforgettable experience. A moist bun that’s so enjoyable, sweet and lovely… Really breathtaking. I still remember the taste to date… Exquisite!

Casablanca_Brunch_Breakfast_Beirut_Lebanon50

Casablanca, its ambiance, its menu and waiters guaranteed to put a smile on your face on a Sunday. Facing the Mediterranean Sea, this old house and its beautiful colors will transport you into a land of magical wonders. I enjoyed the food despite the tiny imperfections as well as the place’s general feel… I would love to hear your opinion about it.

Summer is here and and we know that not just from the change of weather but also with the openings of rooftops in Beirut. The Four Seasons Hotel welcomed the most eminent members of the Beirut Jet-Set, from the showbiz world to the business world as well as artists, diplomats and top journalists to its opening event.

The_Roof_four_seasons_hotel_beirut20

Located by the rooftop pool on the Hotel’s 26th floor, this modish urban tapas lounge offers the perfect perch from which to enjoy sundowners and the season’s hottest club tunes. The Roof’s wraparound views showcase Beirut’s downtown skyline, mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. A floating oasis, the open-air lounge – the highest in Beirut – is a chilled out place to sample the best of the city’s nightlife, with a live DJ spinning tracks until closing.

The_Roof_four_seasons_hotel_beirut22

I was amazed by the little details put into the success of this party:

  • You are welcomed by the valet parking followed by another member of staff even before accessing the hotel
  • On the ground floor, three beautiful ladies dressed with big smiles showed us to the elevators
  • A person inside the elevator accompanies you to the 26th floor
  • During the night, champagne and wine were flowing abundantly… along with cocktails and coolers, wine and smoothies, all made from the freshest ingredients
  • We didn’t have time to look for food as waiters were walking around offering refined delights of the Asian cuisine prepared by the hotel’s talented chefs, including tapas and Asian-inspired bites includes crisp salads, siu mai dumplings and satays. Desserts followed
  • Valet was complementary that evening. A nice gesture from the hotel for the occasion

The_Roof_four_seasons_hotel_beirut01

The party started at Sunset with champagne and wine… guests were amazed by the unique ambiance animated by the resident DJ music and the talented young singer and especially the splendid international hologram 3D visuals animated sculpture, conceived by creators from Urban Screen who specially came for the occasion.

Jean, Charles: Achrafieh’s Delicatessen Heaven

Believe me when I say that I have been meaning to visit Jean, Charles ever since I started NGNO, two years ago, but never got around to doing so. If you’re one of those people who seek and crave some handpicked imported delicatessen, then  Jean, Charles is the place for you. In his small tiny shop, Jean, Charles welcomes you behind the fridge and into a journey of discoveries from France and beyond.

Jean_Charles_Cave_Joel_Robuchon_WIne_Tasting31

Up the road leading to Hotel Alexandre in Achrafieh, you’ll find a small shop on the left… You won’t miss it…. a glass facade, black wood finish and a large light pending over hundreds of food items.

Confiture de ma grand-mère, tripes à la mode de Caen, Comtesse du Barry products, Mille et une Huile collection, les chocolats de Pauline, foie gras, terrine and cheeses from France and much more. Lebanon is represented as well with Brizeles galettes, La Ferme St. Jacques Foie Gras, wines and homemade produces.

The night I visited was dedicated to a tasting experience for a selection of wines from La Cave de Joel Robuchon. They chose Java, the brand’s entry level wine imported from Gascogne, France.

Jean_Charles_Cave_Joel_Robuchon_WIne_Tasting30

The table started to get filled with a selection of special cold cuts:
  • Burgundy ham with aspic served on slices of white bread
  • Goose Rillettes
  • Chorizo et saucisson sec bio
  • Picorino Romano
  • Cookies from Karine Zablit
  • Camembert cheese

The wine tasting:

  • Java, White 2012: For only $10, this wine has an interesting composition.  A pale green reflection covering an intense citrus and white flower aroma. A sharp attack and lightly acidulée, tickling your tongue while its dryness and tonic hide a pleasant fruity aftertaste.
  • Java, Rose 2012: Considered to be in the category of easy to drink wines, this Rose sold for $10 a bottle is great for a pool side drink or a barbecue on the beach.
  • Java, Red 2012: The red wine is just correct. Called the Rouge Plaisir, this wine has a lot of potential for a bottle sold at $10. A fruity finish and a dry mouth, the bottle is better opened an hour or two prior to drinking.

Jean_Charles_Cave_Joel_Robuchon_WIne_Tasting12

An interesting night where I had the chance to discover Jean,Charles’s hidden gem, up close and personal. Of course I  promised him to come back for a more in-depth review before the end of summer.

Chili’s: Back on its Feet

Chilis_Beirut_Diner_Food_Restaurant_Review40
My story with Chili’s is one of those long ones that started when it first opened, and still continues to date. Ups, downs, enjoyment and disappointments, it sometimes feels like a love relationship...
I have always been a huge fan of Chili’s, naming it my favorite diner in Lebanon back in 2011 until things changed last year. Chili’s seemed to have lost interest in the market, quality dropped drastically, service kind of vanished… It took two reviews until my alarm reached the concerned departments. I went on to enjoy a nice meal and wrote a detailed review with happiness and joy about the come back of Chili’s.
Chilis_Beirut_Diner_Food_Restaurant_Review02
A month ago, my wife went to Chili’s and left extremely happy and satisfied. She came back home with a smile on her face telling me about the tasty food, the perfect service and the enjoyment of a memorable night. She insisted that I go see for myself and here we are, doing exactly that.

Chili’s is as good as I expected it to be; the service was great, the food was tasty, the drinks were created meticulously, making our night a great one on all fronts. I heard that the menu will be changed soon, something they do every two years to refresh. So here is the last review before changes are made.

The menu sections:

  • Premium and signature Margaritas
  • Specialty drinks, beer, wine
  • Appetizers
  • Soups and Chili Salads
  • Sandwiches
  • Big Mouth Burgers
  • Southwestern Pastas
  • Baby Back Ribs
  • Fire Grilled Steaks
  • Southwest Grill (Quesadillas, Tacos, Fajitas)
  • Chicken and Seafood
  • Custom Combos and Side Dishes

We ordered and enjoyed:

Some details I enjoyed:

  • Fresh-looking food
  • Adequate food temperature
  • Oil-free plates
  • Crunchy, fresh and super tasty nachos
  • Beautifully presented plates
  • Tasty soft drinks full of flavor and gas
  • One-of-a-kind meat, soft like butter
  • Superb pork ribs
  • Extravagant desserts
  • A waiter that just makes you smile continuously

Adnan, our waiter that night, did everything to put a smile on our faces. He has been working at Chili’s for the last decade after all… he breathes Chili’s and he’s proud of it. We were pampered while spending a memorable night of fun and enjoyment.

To accompany our dinner, what else but a Margarita? I remembered the last experience and it was a total mess. A soggy undrinkable margarita; I’m not sure if the bartender has been changed, but tonight’s was as good as the one I enjoy at Habana in Jounieh. An intense taste, without being too sweet or too alcoholic and a beautiful color with a pleasant aftertaste that accompanies you during dinner.

My recommendation: Ask for a basket of chips and enjoy their crunch. Dip them into the sauce and feel the earthquake

The unacceptable: The menus! Please change the menus. They are unacceptable. It’s not up to standard to see papers torn apart this way. In Arabic; “3ayb”.

Chili’s, the last international diner to survive the Lebanese crisis, is still a place I’ll consider for my “no-calorie-count” meals. I hope and wish the quality remains, as it is and even better.

Kanafanji: Knefeh has a New Address

Kababji, Shawarmanji, maybe soon enough we’ll be hearing about about Burgarji… But for now a new edition to the “ji” list is Kanafanji. This new kenafe ‘specialist’ is located in the heart of Mar Mikhael, one of Beirut’s most popular spots hosting a huge number of restaurants, bars as well as innovative concepts like this one…. After a night out partying or maybe on your way back from work, I suggest you stop by Kanafanji and try some innovative bites of kanafe, knefe or kenafe… However way you write it, it’s still the same favorite Lebanese breakfast indulgence.

Kanafanji_Kenefe_Mar_Mikhael_Beirut11
Kanafanji cannot be missed. A nice wood facade with Kanafanji logo nicely designed in green and orange will definitely grab your attention on Mar Mikhael. A few meters before reaching the Adlieh road, the house of Kanafa, located in Al Mandaloun club building, welcomes you 24hours a day, all week long for quench any sweet cravings.
After asking the manager a few questions, I quickly understood that Kanafanji is planning to revolutionize the breakfast industry in Lebanon, while offering a new approach to the way we enjoy the traditional knefe – imagine a knefe with chocolate chip, and another with Hershey chocolate bits and a large selection off dips and sauces. “Why eat a crepe with different fillings and sauces… and not a knefe?”
The entry level knefe is exactly like the others in town and costs LBP5,000. You can ask for more and order the Kanafanji special for LBP8,000 or the extra for LBP9,000.
Kanafanji_Kenefe_Mar_Mikhael_Beirut10
Let’s understand the concept first:
  • Kanafanji promises to offer knefe specialties; a process under development
  • The Kanafa is priced at LBP5,000 for a sandwich of 180grams. The platter containing 260grams is for LBP7,000.
  • Open 24hours, you can enjoy this Lebanese favorite dessert all day long
  • A coffee shop and dessert parlor, try their selection of coffee or cakes all with a Lebanese approach

We reached Kanafanji, opened the glass door and entered a small shop where a large tray of Kanafa is on display. To change from the ones we know and maybe minimizing space, the Kanafa cooking tray used here is rectangular. To the left is a fridge displaying a selection of cakes.

The place:
  • Kanafanji is a small cozy place on a corner street
  • Simple wood, covers the walls and floor
  • A nice logo, simple and straight to the point attracts customers driving along the street
  • Green, yellow and brown are the three colors that represent the brand
  • The shop can welcome three guests at a time, three beautifully designed seating spots… but one chair
  • You’ll find a fridge and a Kanafa display and two staff members standing behind them

The menu:
  • Kanafanji special
  • Maamoul bi achta
  • Maamoul bi joz
  • Nammoura
  • Nammoura joz el hind
  • Nammoura bel mkassarat
  • Nammoura bi ashta
  • Sfouf
  • Sfouf bi mkassarat
  • Sfouf bi Laktin
One knefe please: The bun, a 12 centimeter Kaaka is first opened and filled with sugar syrup which is absorbed by the bread. The excesses is then removed and a large piece of kanafa is stuffed inside. They put in one large piece and not two small squares which make the sandwich easy to eat without dripping. It is then wrapped in aluminium foil and served. You can ask for it as a takeaway, where you’ll get it in a hamburger-like carton box for easy transportation.
My first impression:
  • This version of the Kanafa is different. The cheese is lighter, melts more and feels less fatty
  • The Kanafa as is- in my opinion- needs more body and lacks consistency. One single kind of cheese is not what people expect from a Kanafa. When you eat that kind of dessert, you don’t think about your diet. The topping, the semolina dough - again in my opinion- is too thin. It’s not proportional to the thickness of the cheese. I’m not sure if the comparison is adequate but I felt like I was eating a cheese Mankoushe with added sugar syrup.
  • The bun on another hand is a bit chewy for this kind of dessert. It steals away from the enjoyment you would expect to feel from the filling. It feels like “Kaaka 3asrouniya” made smaller. I’ll personally work on that issue
  • Close your eyes and you’ll feel like you’re eating a sesame sandwich; too much sesame on the bun, way too much. It’s unpleasant to chew, unpleasant to feel and unpleasant to feel stuck between your teeth
The knefe is not bad, it’s actually good but it’s not extraordinary. When a place is single branded, you would expect it to offer magic… And that’s what I didn’t feel.

I tried something different; I decided to go for the special plate. This way I could be more accurate with my opinion on the place. I tried the special plate is an Ashta Kanafa, served cold on a round plate and covered with fruits. Beautiful and mouthwatering, this is a dessert I recommend. Be prepared, that’s more of a portion for two persons.

A round, single portion ashta Kanafa surrounded with strawberries and covered with pineapple and kiwi slices. Imagine an exotic Kanafa with chocolate or caramel sauce on top. I personally loved it; although too sweet and too heavy for a single meal, but it’s a nice thing to try. Order it and share it among friends. For LBP9,000, be sure you’ll be getting your money’s worth. An interesting consistency, good thickness, and tasty flavor with rich ashta – you’ll enjoy.

Ok, so what else can we try? Let’s try the maamoul and sfouf, I was curious to taste what individual portions taste like. Kanafanji is working on producing individual portions of Kanafa as well as our favorite desserts like maamoul and sfouf. The maamoul is rich with prominent walnut taste wrapped by a crunchy envelope but unfortunately feels dry. The first bite is enjoyable… The second is too much, the third is hard to swallow. Who created maamoul madd and added ashta to it,did that on purpose. I’ll personally make it juicier or serve it with a dip.

The sfouf is a big no. These are nothing close to sfouf. Dry, thick and hard to swallow, like a dry English cake. Sfoufs should be moist, sticky, juicy, and tender and melt under your palate. This recipe should be reconsidered.

I liked: The individual portions of Kanafeh proposed in a plastic box and wrapped in carton. No cutting is needed and no filling. It is baked and ready to take away.
Let’s do this constructively and wish these guys a bright future… I believe in this brand and honestly believe that it can represent Lebanon abroad. Kanafanji can expand and become a drive-through concept, as well as a reference for an enjoyable breakfast. But before that many things have to be fixed:
  • Clean the place up, make it perfect and neat. It’s an upscale version of the street Kanafa after all. The first impression should be breathtaking while it’s not at the moment
  • Using rectangular trays is a good idea but they have to be smaller to fit in proportionally in your tiny shop. The presentation is unappealing
  • Remove those ugly nylon wrappings. The buns, the cakes and the Kanafa trays are wrapped in ugly and unprofessional nylon wrappings: It’s unacceptable and unappetizing
  • Being unique and new is something but changing the original taste is something else. I’m sure that the objective is to be healthier but unfortunately here, the taste has changed
  • Reduce the sesame seeds of the bun: Urgently
  • Since the place is now open, the chocolate sauce and other innovative ideas should be already on sale
Conclusion: I like the concept and some of the things they offer. I strongly believe that the brand has big potential for a bright future. It only needs to be looked at closer, more tasting and development with a closer eye to details.
I encourage you to try it. The originality is worth experiencing…

An NGNO reader sent me a request to try “Al Daoukieh” at Daouk in Tarik Jdideh, next to the Cola Roundabout. This Lebanese pastry shop has created a unique dessert that has made it to all four corners of the world. Intrigued?

I reached a small, humble place, different from those buildings most famous commercial names have built. Sitting behind a desk, a man welcomed me with a smile. As I asked about the Daoukieh he shouted at the man behind the counter to get it from the fridge. A green thing that looked like a knefeh or mafroukeh appeared.

Intriguing at first: Is that the common Bohsalino renamed? Or something like maamoul madd? Maybe mafroukeh? My mouth started watering. “Do you mind if I take couple photos please?” I asked the man. “Pictures are not allowed,” he replied, “but take a bite and try it.” I was offered a piece which I started examining closely, turning it around, taking pictures from all sides… so the man looked at me as if I was a kid seeing chocolate for the first time and said: “Fine, I will allow you to take pictures, just eat now.”

Thank you Lama for this address, you made my day…

For the record:

  • Bohsalino: It has a special cup-like design. It’s a rich Kashta sandwiched between two layers of pistachio and semolina. Eaten cold and fresh, it has been a favorite among Arabic sweets for a long time.
  • Mafroukeh bi festok (ma-frou-ké)A traditional Lebanese dessert, served on a platter like knefe; it’s made of semolina, sugar, and butter infused with sugar syrup, orange blossom, and rose water. It’s topped with a ashta. Mafroukeh bi festok and Bohsalino seem to be the same thing, different presentation.
  • Al Daoukieh is an extended version of the Bohsalino… Unique on all fronts. What makes all the difference are the non salted cashew nuts layered under the ashta, the ashta impressive quality and the pistachio specially mixed in their own way.
Daoukieh_Da3ou2ieh_Peanuts_Arabic_Sweets_Dessert_Beirut12

Just imagine: A layer of pistachio purée, green like grass, topped with cashew nuts, a layer of ashta and on top of it more pistachio with little sugar bits shining beautifully in between. The pistachio mixed with semolina slide under your teeth, erupting with a rich taste while a strong flavor of pistachio caress your taste buds. Premium quality, cold and fresh ashta (clotted cream) follows all this, melting together under your palate until you crunch into those cashew nuts which will put a smile on your face. While enjoying those heavenly bites, all you have to do is close your eyes and feel the perfumes of orange blossom and rose water taking over your brain cells. Believe me when I say that I’ve never eaten anything like this in my entire life. Orgasmic!

The same day, I decided to publish the photo of this dessert on Facebook. I just wanted to see how many people knew about it. The photo alone was shared 30 times; it was seen by 30,000 people and had 120 comments at the time of writing. I also received several phone calls confirming that this dessert is something out of this world… heavenly and majestic.

Now I understand why I need to come all the way to Cola roundabout in the heart of Beirut for this mouthwatering Lebanese sweet innovation… And I believe you should do the same.

A kilo sells for LBP20,000, or you can order a “Daoukieh extra” individual portion decorated with nuts at LBP24,000 the kilo.

My latest dessert discovery is a must try.
